Laser Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing removes damaged skin, allowing fresh, new skin to restore your appearance. For many years, skin resurfacing was achieved using chemical peels and dermabrasion. While those procedures are effective and still used, advanced lasers have been developed that provide important advantages over other methods.

Lasers can be precisely adjusted to remove skin in one very thin layer at a time, only going as deep as necessary to treat your skin concerns. They can also target a pinpoint area of skin, such as tiny spider veins.

What skin conditions are treated with the Icon™ Aesthetic System?

Dr. C. uses the Icon Aesthetic System to perform laser skin resurfacing. This system gives her the flexibility to choose the laser treatment that’s best for each person’s individual skin care. Depending on the laser handpiece used, treatments can remove layers of skin, or leave skin intact and reach deep below the surface to stimulate collagen growth and tighten the skin.

The Icon laser can solve a variety of skin problems.* It can:

  • Diminish fine lines and wrinkles
  • Eliminate melasma (brown spots)
  • Remove scars (acne and surgical)
  • Remove facial veins
  • Diminish stretch marks
  • Treat sun damage
  • Improve complexion by evening the skin tone
  • Diminish large oil glands

Can lasers treat rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels on the face. It can affect anyone, but often develops in middle-aged women with fair skin. It doesn’t have a cure, so treatment focuses on minimizing flare-ups.

Lasers improve the appearance of rosacea by eliminating the redness and visible blood vessels. Red blood cells and red pigments absorb the laser, which destroys the targeted tissues. Patients report seeing a 40-60% improvement in rosacea symptoms after two laser sessions.

What should you expect during and after laser skin resurfacing?

Treatment may take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the procedure performed and the area being treated. Recovery time also varies according to the type of treatment and whether skin was removed.

Your skin may be slightly red and swollen, and you may need little to no recovery time, or you may need weeks to recover; it varies for each treatment. Deep skin resurfacing often requires one to two weeks of downtime to allow for healing. Dr. C. lets you know about recovery time and gives you instructions for self-care following treatment.
